WHAT IS THERAPY?
The process offers you an
opportunity to explore the issues that have brought you to Wellspring,
in a confidential setting.
Your therapist will listen
carefully to what you have to say and will help you to identify and
explore your feelings about what is concerning or troubling you.
You and your therapist may
decide that a brief, solution- focused approach is best. Together, you
would formulate a focus for the sessions to help you explore your options,
reach decisions, make choices, and find your own solutions.
Alternatively, you might
prefer a more open-ended arrangement to allow you time to reflect on
your difficulties in greater depth.
What is the difference
between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
There is considerable overlap
between counselling and psychotherapy in relation to theory and practice,
but there are also some distinct differences. These differences
include: psychotherapy training and preparation is longer than counselling
training and the requirements of the trainee are usually more in depth.
Both counselling and psychotherapy are appropriate for similar issues,
but the training of the psychotherapist prepares him/her to work with
greater complexity of issues. It is important to remember, however,
that counselling is not more useful than psychotherapy, and vice versa,
but that the two disciplines are closely aligned with significant similarities.
It is also important to note that experienced counsellors often find
that they are working psychotherapeutically, and there is an ongoing
professional debate as to whether these two disciplines are indeed different.
Essentially, it is the experience of the practitioner and their way
of relating that appears to be the most important factor in the therapeutic
process.
